woody thyme and weak chives

My thyme is forever woody is there something I can do to prevent this? Maybe not enough N? Chives never stand up stiffly. Too much water? Thanks
Doug says that thyme is a woody plant - and if you want a lot of tender new growth, you're going to have to prune it to create that growth.
Here's a video that describes how to get new growth on a plant by using the right pruning cut
Floppy chives - they tend to do that when grown in high water, high fertility soils. Too soft growth (but they do tend to do it once the leaves are mature anyway)
