when to plant perennials in the fall
should i plant the heucheras, japense fern, etc right now? i found the plants to buy but wanted to make sure... thanks
Doug says that perennials in pots can be planted at any time of year. Simply be careful of disturbing the roots and you'll be fine. With fall planting, do not feed the plants at all to stimulate new top growth (compost and bone meal worked into the planting soil is fine - no nitrogen fertilizing)
I do a lot of work with perennials in September, digging, dividing and moving 'em around.
