Variegated Arundo donax

by Connie
(Ohio)

I live in Zone 6 ( Ohio) I have gotten different information concerning this plant. Does it grow similar to other grasses ( clumping) or is this a running type that I need to be concerned that will "take-over" my back yard. Thanks for any experienced information that you can provide.

Doug says: Arundo donax in a USDA zone 6 is not a running plant. It is going to be "mostly" hardy for you and it will form a clump. In warmer areas, it can form large clumps reasonably quickly and indeed can self-sow to become a bit of a nuisance.

But in Ohio - you'll get a clump. And I'd protect it in the winter if it were in my garden as the variegated form is somewhat more tender than the species.
