Training phlox

How do I plant creeping flox so they will spread more sideways. I have a very short retaining wall with a long bear side to it . I would like the Flox to eventually fill in gaps between the verigated hostas along wall edge but don't want to waste them if they droop too far over the edge into the driveway.

Doug says that creeping phlox (Phlox subulata) do tend to go where they want to go but generally spread equally in all directions. You can gently divide the phlox as they get close to the wall (remove the part closest to the wall) and replant where you want it between the hosta. But mostly, I wouldn't worry about it - they'll find a way to spread wherever they can find a way to grow.

Training Phlox down a wall
by: Beth

I'd like to do exactly the opposite: I want to encourage my phlox to cover a concrete retaining wall, but it seems to prefer spreading wide. Is there some way of encouraging it to creep down the wall? Perhaps only shearing the growth on the wall side--or not shearing it? I can't quite figure out the "logic" of this plant. Thanks!
