Spring, sumer & fall ground ccover

by Yolanda
(Cleveland, Ohio)

I am looking for a ground cover that will flower in the late spring, summer and early fall - are there any ground covers such as those - someone recommend "blanket flower" or something called "snow on the mountain"I don't want it any taller than a foot and low maintenance.

Doug says you want a ground cover that blooms all summer. Me too. When you find one, let me know.

Blanket-flower is usually Gaillardia- a self-sowing perennial but not usually a ground cover. And snow-on-the-mountain doesn't really flower - just spreads like a mad fiend.

The closest thing to this request would be Potentilla grandiflora multiflora - a fast growing spreading groundcover with small yellow flowers that blooms from early summer through fall. It is a "fast" spreader - a thug and should not be released into a good garden (he says while he's working at getting rid of a previous owners planting in his new garden)

So - sorry but I can't help you with this request - no such plant.

Try Lamium Silver Beacon
by: Peggy in Upstate NY

I have a Lamium Silver Beacon in zone 4 - 5 that flowers 1st thing in spring right up till winter.... Don't know if this is usual, but I've divided and now have this around my garden in the front border. Give it a try, you might like it....

Ground cover idea
by: Trish form Flagstaff AZ

I, too, am looking for a ground cover, but I'm looking for one my dog will like too, as she spends a lot of time outside where the ground cover will be. We are in very different climates (I'm in zone 5, but was born in Cleveland OH!). Anyway, what I am going to try this year is White Dutch Clover. I understand there are many different clovers with different leaf colors and flowers. I've heard WDC is drought resistent (not an issue for you, I know) and very hardy and comes back year after year. I remember as a child, my mom would pay us to PULL the clover out of the grass, so I know it must be hardy there too. My plan is to cover the yard by pullling all the weeds (a daunting task), cover with newspaper, cardboard or other mulch, then cover with top soil and then broadcast the seeds evenly. I hope to do this before the monsoons come in July, but plan to water until then just to get it started. Hope this helps. Good luck!
