pruning perennial hibiscus

by Indian
(Quebec)

Hello,

I would like to know if I can cut back my perennial hibiscus in the fall. The stems are very thick and they seem to be woody, I was wondering if they were like Hydrangeas, which won't flower if they are cut back.

Thank you

Doug says that perennial hibiscus are indeed cut back in the fall. The above ground parts will die in Quebec in any case and the plant will regrow next spring from the roots (and flower next fall again). Just understand that the perennial hibiscus is going to be one of the last plants to start growing in your garden next spring. Everything else will be up and growing - and indeed some will be flowering before this lazy plant starts to grow. I've seen it wait until second or third week of June in my garden.
