My hostas are way too big!

Can I just cut off some of the leaves and stems from around the outsides of some really huge hostas or must I try to divide them? Dividing them when they are this big is a bit more than I can handle.

Doug says you can do anything you like with a plant. Cutting back the outside ones will kill the offshoots eventually. A rather short sighted way to garden indeed. :-)

Dig and divide is my advice - take chunks off the outside in the spring rather than trying to dig up the entire thing all at once.

And find a shorter, more contained variety would be the second bit of advice
