Loss of Shade for Hostas

Our two large cherry trees died and were removed. The beautiful hostas planted below them are now fully exposed. Two newly-planted native Carolinian species are still too small to provide shade for the large hostas.
What type of temporary shade would you recommend?

Doug says that temporary shade sounds ugly. Let me suggest you either move the Hosta or just let them sit in the sun. They won't die out there - they'll possibly lose some leaf color (depending on variety) and it will give you some time to make design decisions. Toss them an extra bit of water every now and then but they'll be fine.

But that sounds like a design decision - what looks good on a temporary basis (you could use an umbrella) :-) and not a plant one. Have fun with your creative solutions.

Hostas
by: Lya Sorano

The poor Hostas! I just interviewed a man, who moved 2,000 Hostas from one home garden to a new one, a few years ago, and then lost 500 of them in the 2008-2009 drought we had in North Georgia. He is not discouraged - works with what he's got left and adds more as the garden muse inspires him.

Much success!
