Lavatera 'Barnsley Baby'

by Deanne

I planted my lavatera about a month ago, & when I bought the plant, it had lots of blooms on it. The blooms have since then come & gone, & the plant continues to grow, but no blooms. Is this common, or do I need to be doing something to promote the blooms?

Thank you for your help.

Doug says - that this plant, to the best of my knowledge, should only bloom once a year. It is a cultivar of Lavatera thuringiaca and while you can encourage the blooms to produce a few extra by proper deadheading and feeding, one big flush is all you get.

Lavatera Barnsley

We have a lavatera Barnsley (not a "Baby"). It grows to about 8 ft. high each year, and is covered with blooms from June through October. I believe they are continuous bloomers.

I can't say for sure re: Barnsley Baby but a possible reason for your plant failing to continue to bloom may have been that it was not watered enough. On some plants (and lavatera is one) if the plant dries out (i.e. the soil gets dry) the first thing to go is the buds dry up (i.e. the flower buds). Certain plants must be kept watered during bud formation or the buds will simply not grow to maturity. The plant may look and BE healthy but no flowers. So try keeping your lavatera watered well and see how you make out. :)

Plant Tag is Misleading on Lavatera
by: Deanne

Thanks for getting back with me concerning my Barnsley Baby Lavatera. It said on the tag that it blooms from May through September. I took that to mean that it blooms continuously May-Sept; not just one time. Oh well, now I know what to expect out of it next year. It's still pretty, even with just the foliage.

Thanks again for your help.
