I live in zone 9, will hollyhocks grow here? I don't see them in garden centers.

Doug says the high heat is going to beat them up really badly. So seed is cheap and you can try but don't bet the farm. They'll also not likely get the dormancy period (winter) they want. Remember they flower on second year plants so you have two strikes. But hope springs eternal. :-) And as I said, seed is cheap.

Yes They Will

I've grown Hollyhocks for years in Zone 9. Plant your seeds in an area that gets morning sun. They don't want to bake all day in full sunshine. In summer, make sure to water them in the morning and again in the afternoon but don't "soak" them. A light watering twice a day does better but make sure you give enough water so the water can get down to the roots.

Some plants will go into a dormant spell and others have bloomed all year. I guess it depends on the variety and the individual plant.

It takes patience and with a little luck, you'll have Hollyhocks blooming their hearts out within a couple of months.
