how to kill perenial ground cover

I bought a house that I just found out has perennial ground cover growing out of control and I do not want it anymore how can I get rid of it!

Doug says you start digging.

You can also spray it with one of the organic herbicides on the market that will burn off the tops. This must be repeated several times (every time it looks like it is throwing new leaves) but repeated applications of a good organic herbicide will kill almost anything if repeated properly.
