Ground covers that are safe for dogs

Can you please tell me what groundcovers are SAFE for dogs? I don't care about the pounding it will take, just as long as it is not harmful to the dog. Thank YOU!!!

Doug says that if you're asking are there plants that dogs can eat and not be poisoned by - then just about everything that can be grown in a USDA zone 4-5 is fine. That's assuming your dog is in the habit of eating outdoor plants. I can't speak to tropical or Southern plants - and you don't say where you're writing from.

My answer above is incomplete. And thanks to the vigilant reader below for pointing it out.

If you're asking will it survive dog "pounding" - then the answer is no - nothing's going to take constant dog-pounding, walking or being lied on.

As far as I know, Vinca is fine for dogs, is not a poisonous plant.

Safe Groundcovers for Dogs
by: Paula

Sorry I forgot to mention where I am writing from. We live in San Antonio, TX and the area that will be planted with groundcover is shady. So we were considering Vinca Minor, but am afraid that this is poisnous for the puppy. Any comments will be welcomed.
