Ground cover under a couple of cherry trees.

by David
(Oswego, NY)

I need some idea's of what I can plant under a couple of cherry trees. There is about a 4 foot wide raised flat area with a steep 3 foot slope down to the grass and front lawn. Under the tree ares is normally dirt and weeds and a pain to mow and looks bad. Any suggestions of how to dress up under the trees? Thanks

Doug says that in Oswego you can grow any of the common ground cover plants listed on this page. If you're looking for something evergreen with flowers then Vinca minor is likely a good choice. I'd suggest one of the nicer varieties (variegated or shiny leaved) rather than the species but it depends on your budget. :-)

Please, Not Vinca!
by: Connie Hoge

Please plant a native New York groundcover, not Vinca, which is a very invasive import. You see, nothing eats vinca. No bugs, I mean. So there aren't enough bugs for the birds to feed their spring babies. Try the native violets, such as Viola papilonacea. Certain butterflies cannot exist unless their larvae can get enough violets to eat!
