Flower Garden
Design
Flower garden design
need not be the domain of designers and landscapers. While
these
folks can create some gorgeous gardens,
homeowners with a little patience can create a perennial garden that
blooms all summer by following these simple procedures.
To begin
Draw out your garden area (to scale).
Step Two
Add the shapes of your individual flower bunches. Note that we
call
these “drifts” and that there are typically 3-5 individual plants in a
drift depending on the plant. What you’re looking for is a mass of
color. Individual perennial plants are lonely-looking and do not create
a “WOW!” factor. If you want WOW! – plant in drifts.
Step Three
Next count the number of drifts in your garden bed and
divide
by three. This is the number of spring, summer and fall blooming drifts
you are going to plant. In the example, I have roughly 12-14 drifts for
each bloom season.
Step Four
Label the drifts you’d like to bloom in the
spring with a 1. (You can use anything you like but I find it it easier
to use numbers)
Then label the summer bloomers in their drifts
And finally, label the fall bloomers
To turn this flower garden design into reality, plant drifts
of those bloom time perennials in each bed where indicated. This
creates a perennial flower bed that will be in bloom all summer long.
