Black Eyed Susans Hardiness

Do they multiply, will they come back every season?

Doug says that there are multiple articles and comments on this page about this plant but the specific answer to this question is that "it depends". :-)

It depends on the variety you're planting. Some are annuals, some biennial (flower second year and die) and others are bone-hardy perennials. So - tell me which you've planted and I'll tell you what your chances are that they'll return next year in NC. The odds are that all but the annuals will.

Do they multiply. Yes. If you let them set seed and the birds/ants don't get the seed. You can save your own seed and sow it yourself next spring just in case you might have annuals. You'll know when you see the older plants popping up which you have (or conversely if they're all dead - you know as well) :-)

But it really does depend on what you're growing whether they're going to come back for you.

In NC, you're going to find most will come back. Here in Canada, we need the tougher ones.

Hope that helps.

Black-eyed Susan Seeds
by: ladykspiderclan

I have seed heads from the flowers I commented on if anyone wants them. Will trade for other perenniel seeds or a SASE Envelope and two .44 cent stamps. I also have Queen Anne's lace and native sunflowers. Just email me at klt@gotsky.com.

Wow. Might anyone be willing to send me some of those wonderful seeds?

Even after being mowed down they come back
by: ladykspiderclan

I live in Zone 5B, and Black Eyed Susans are native here. I have mowed them out of our pastures and road-side unknowingly for over 2 years, but if I stop mowing for just a minute, they return more prolifically than ever. I believe it's because they are rampant self-sowers, and the birds and wind help with that. In one flower alone, I counted over 200 seed heads.

If they come up where you don't want them - you need to pull out before they have seeded. From my personal experience, mowing or cutting down doesn't help much.

I was given some last summer by a friend. This year they went crazy, I never realized that they grew to about over 2 feet and I have them beside my house...yikes!!! They multiplied like rabbits and I have just cut them all back last week because they are starting to die off. My question is will they come back even in more abundance that last year? Also when should I transplant them to the back yard where they can have all the space they need.
Thanks Carol
